Postgraduate Research Scholarships, School of Environment & Development, the University of ManchesterSchool of Environment and Development Research Scholarship

The School will award two SED Research Scholarships for doctoral candidates starting the academic year beginning September 2009/10. School of Environment and Development Teaching Bursaries

The School will award a number of Teaching Bursaries in the academic year 2009/10. The Bursary consists of payment of/a contribution towards tuition fees at the rate of the standard SED home rate. Non EU students will be required to pay the difference between the home fee and the full overseas fee. The award holders will be expected to undertake an element of teaching work as a condition of their award.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the Scholarships and Teaching Bursaries should hold or be expecting a First Class degree award, and/or a Distinction in a related Masters degree. Applicants who hold a good 2:1 in their first degree will be considered on merit.
Applicants for the Teaching Bursary should include full details of any teaching experience or areas of expertise on their application form. Applicants to both schemes should apply via the normal postgraduate online application form and include a full research proposal with their application. In the funding section of the PG application form applicants should enter: SED Teaching Bursary.

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funding
AHRC-funded studentships will be available either through the AHRC’s Studentship Competition, or through a Block Grant Partnership (BGP) whereby the University will have an allocated number of studentships in specified subject areas and for specified schemes — Research Preparation Masters (RPM), Professional Preparation Masters (PPM), and Doctoral.
The University has applied for a BGP and will know the outcome on 23 February 2009. If the application is successful, the BGP will allow the University to award, on a competitive basis and subject to AHRC approval, studentships to prospective postgraduate students. EU nationals accepted to study on programmes and in subject areas for which BGP studentships have been allocated will be eligible for nomination to AHRC. Information about the outcome of the BGP Competition will be posted on this web page and elsewhere. The University hopes that, when the outcome of its application is known, it will be able to offer a number of Doctoral awards in the subject area of Russian, Slavonic and Eastern European Language and Culture over the period covered by the first round of the Scheme (2009–2013). The Maastricht Graduate School of Governance is looking for 3 PhD candidates to work on a project on Migration and Development financed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applicants must be willing to work on 1 of 3 research themes:

1) Remittances, development (local economic growth) and poverty alleviation – The main research question of this first theme will be: To what extent do remittances contribute to development (local economic growth) and welfare including poverty alleviation, the reduction of inequality, vulnerably and increased capabilities?

2) Brain drain and development policy – The types of questions answered under this theme are: What effect does the option for emigration have on potential migrants or institutions in the sending countries? What is the effect of emigration on the sending country due to the loss of human capital? What effects do the highly skilled migrants have on the sending country while aboard? What makes migrants return and how can this be enhanced? What are the impacts of existing general development policy on the propensity of the highly skilled populations in developing countries to migrate to developed countries?

3) Return migration in the life cycle of migrants -  Theme 3 focuses on topics such as: How does return migration fit within the life cycle of migrant workers and migrants coming to developed countries for other reasons (family reunification, asylum)? Under what circumstances do returnees have a positive/negative impact on development? Can reintegration schemes make a positive contribution? Factors like permanent or temporary work/residence permits and voluntary or forced return will be taken into account.

Candidate profile: The Maastricht Graduate School of Governance welcomes prospective PhD fellows with a background in migration studies or quantitative methods. Students must have at least a Masters degree in a social science discipline. We are looking for students with strong analytical capacity. Quantitative skills are required and familiarity with qualitative research methods is desirable. Prior field experience in Morocco, Ethiopia, Rwanda or Afghanistan is an advantage. The candidate must be fluent in English. Knowledge of Dutch and/or French is desirable. The current fellows come from both within the EU as well as from other continents, and have a multidisciplinary background, such as master degrees in economics, social sciences and political science.

General Electric (GE) a lansat a sasea editie a Programului de Burse Scholar Leaders. Cei care aplica pentru o bursa GE pot castiga 1.500 euro anual, timp de 2 ani.

Programul se adreseaza studentilor de anul 2 din principalele centre universitare din tara: Universitatea Politehnica din Timisoara, Universitatea Alexandru Ioan Cuza din Iasi, Universitatea Babes-Bolyai din Cluj, Academia de Studii Economice din Bucuresti si  Universitatea Politehnica din Bucuresti.

Cei care vor sa se inscrie trebuie sa aiba rezultate academice foarte bune si sa se fi implicat in activitati extracurriculare (de exemplu, munca in folosul comunitatii, implicarea in anumite grupuri studentesti sau organizatii de voluntari).
